Saturday we occupied the second
of two stations located within Winter Quarters Bay, Station 9, see photos
showing location or the Station. In first photo, Station 9 is located
at two crossed flags, note the ice pier behind of the station. The second
photo shows the station with the dive tent in position. The ice pier is
constructed of ice, rocks, and steel cables. The supply vessels and icebreaker
dock at the ice pier when they arrive later in the season, see photo 5.
The divers collected sediment samples and fish samples, Trematomus bernacchii
and Trematomus pennelii. Water samples were also collected from this station.
Andrew, Guy, Marietta, and Steve went to the ice caves and Scott's Hut
from the ill-fated 1911 expedition to the South Pole. The third photo
is from an ice cave and the fourth photo of some of the provisions from
within Scott's Hut.
