Another day of collecting samples for the transects. The marine sediment sampling program consists of five transects with 3 stations based on water depth. Sediment cores are collect at each station for e-coli determination (5 replicates), mictrotoxicity analysis (3 replicates), organic and trace metal analyses (3 replicates), AVS analysis (1 composite), meiofaunal collections (2 replicates), and infaunal collection (3 replicates). Our team relies heavily on the divers who brave the cold depths. Kelly Hance and Rob Robbins are the two divers helping us collect these cores. With "lobster gloves" that are somewhat clumsy but keep their hands warm from the bitter cold depths of McMurdo Sound, these men core the sediments at depths ranging from an interval of 40 to 118 feet. They work with small and large cores with corks of various sizes. Also, they collect marine critters on the sediment surface.
After the divers surface with the samples, the GERG/UTMRI team sets up a small work station. In this cramped space located in the far corner of the fish hut opposite the stove and door the team huddles to extrude samples. Once placed in the various containers (petri dishes, jars, etc) we transport these samples back to the lab for analysis. D. Gielstra
